Kusuda 2022 Riesling Trockenbeerenauslese ‘Gold Capsule’

Date of harvest: 17 to 26th. April. Harvested by hand with extremely strict selection, berry by berry.

Sugar level (Brix): 50.5

Alcohol: 8%

Residual sugar: 308 g/l

Total Acidity: 13.5 g/l

pH: n/a

Vinification: Crushed by foot, soaked overnight, then pressed, settled for another day with bentonite. Fermented in used French oak barrels for 19 days.

Remarks: Warmer spring. Wetter start of summer was balanced by very dry January, which led to an expectation of rare combination of quantity and quality. However, it was met by never-seen-before rain events in usually dry February, then rescued by relatively dry March. About 80% of the whole crop was left unpicked after the harvest for dry Riesling. Roughly 20% of these was painstakingly sorted out, which brought hard to believe level of sugar AND acidity, which might not be repeated in the foreseeable future.

"TBA had a tad more than 50 brix at harvest. But the max measurement
was 50 and it could be a lot more... The resudial sugar of 310g is
about the double of my previous TBAs, so too (nearly) the acid. I
doubt I will see a juice like that in the near future. Could be
never. Hence Gold Capsule (about 230 Oechsle, which doesn't happen
often in Germany)."
