In 1985, three clones of Gamay were planted high in the Piccadilly Valley. A few years later, as the variety fell out of favour, the vines were grafted over to Chardonnay. It wasn’t until 2013 that Taras convinced his grower friend Sam to remove the Chardonnay grafts and revive the original Gamay vines. Cuttings from the three clones were subsequently grafted onto established vines in Sam’s quartz-laden Woodside vineyard, planted on the site of a former gold mine. The first crop was harvested in 2019, followed by bushfire in 2020 and another harvest in 2021. By 2022, the vines had begun to find their natural balance.
A tightly wound, classic expression of Gamay, with a fragrant medicinal character and savoury spice layered over redcurrant and red berry fruit. The palate is polished and mineral, with a lithe yet concentrated texture. Elegant and finely structured, it carries through to a long, pure finish.
